When young, Quercus afares has a pyramidal or fastigiate habit, but it spreads as it ages. It develops corky bark that is thinner than the corky bark found on Quercus suber and bears plentiful crops of acorns. It can tolerate dry, coastal sites and is semi-evergreen in warm climates.
