Prunus x subhirtella ‘Southern Gem’ is tolerant of root confinement, making it a good choice for smaller spaces. In the autumn months, the foliage of Prunus x subhirtella ‘Southern Gem’ turns shades of yellow, orange, and red, adding a bright splash of color to the landscape. Prunus x subhirtella is a hybrid between Prunus itosakura (syn. Prunus subhirtella) and Prunus incisa. Prunus x subhirtella is deciduous and native to Japan. Prunus x subhirtella ‘Southern Gem’ was developed in Dunedin, New Zealand.
