European Hornbeam
Carpinus betulus has a strong, pyramidal form when young, which becomes rounded with age. The rich-green leaves are heavily-ribbed and turn yellow in autumn, followed by brown leaves throughout the winter. Carpinus betulus is excellent for use as a hedge, and is very popular for pleaching. Its yellow-green catkins in early to mid-spring are a good source of pollen for bees, making it a great addition to a bee-friendly garden.
