Alnus glutinosa
Common Alder
Alnus glutinosa is characterized by its pyramidal form and ability to thrive in very wet areas. It can also tolerate dry, infertile soils and is a vigorous, quick-growing plant. It is an excellent option for use as a shelter tree and is great for erosion control and stabilizing river banks. During the early to mid-spring months, it produces yellow-green catkins that serve as a source of pollen for bees. Furthermore, Alnus glutinosa can fix nitrogen in the soil, which is beneficial for improving soil conditions for other plants. Alnus glutinosa is deciduous and native to almost the whole of continental Europe (except for both the extreme north and south) as well as the United Kingdom and Ireland.
