This apple variety is an excellent choice for organic growers as it is highly resistant to black spot disease and requires little, if any, spraying. The fruit has a red blush, with a crisp, juicy, sweet-tart flavor, and Malus domestica ‘Liberty’ is known to be a heavy bearer. The fruit becomes ripe from mid to late autumn, and in spring, the pink buds develop into white flowers. While Malus domestica ‘Liberty’ is self-fertile, it is best to plant it with early-flowering cultivars such as Malus domestica ‘Braeburn’ to achieve the best crop. Additionally, the fruit is an excellent keeper. Malus domestica is deciduous and native to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and China. Malus domestica ‘Liberty’ was developed in 1955 by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York, United States and was first released into commerce in 1978.
